Violence -- a political issue?

Strictly speaking, violence is not, but its impact on our lives is great whether it touches us directly or through what we read or hear. Why do we see so much random violence to the point we cannot feel totally secure?

No candidate though would run on- I'm for more violence. The thing of interest  is what leads to violence in a community and that is very much a political issue where candidates promise us peace and good lives. Sometimes, they come up with what things they would get rid of if they win a political office. Those things are issues. Here is where we need to think about whether it's right and do they speak to all of what might lead to it in a culture where violence is too prevalent-- even when it is random?

Touching on those topics here will, by necessity, be cursory. It would take books to explore each of them. I hope a blog will be enough to trigger interest for those who haven't, maybe, thought that deeply for how it might impact their lives through black swan events.

The topics include wars (an obvious one), guns (maybe also obvious at least to some), law enforcement, news coverage, and I could add entertainment, which means movies and games), but I am unsure how much it adds to actual violence given it's been around a LONG time. Still, I'll discuss it and maybe a few other things as they come to me.

Let's start with wars. Where it comes to violence, wars are the epitome of approved violence, at least on one side. Yet, are they even mentioned in most of our political rhetoric?

Wars have much impacted my life. I was born in the middle of WWII. I grew up in its aftermath and the Cold War era. The Korean war from 1950 to 1953 was called an Armed Conflict, but it was a war.

Some believe that fighting wars overseas will keep the blood from being spread on their own land. I heard it a lot about Vietnam and the domino effect if we didn't send troops there. Well, we sent them and many without wanting to go as the draft  (more about conscription) dealt with that. Young men were the only ones subject to the draft in the beginning, but I've since read today, that young women must also sign up. Where could that lead? Calling up the draftees is mostly needed when we fight an unpopular war or a long one.

So, why do I think wars can lead to violence at home? Part of it is those who came back not only with injuries but also PTSD for what they experienced. This can lead to confused thinking and violent actions. One of the first mass killings I remember came from a rooftop in Texas with a veteran of the Vietnam War.

With that war, of 1955 to 1975, we eventually had to get out after 282,000 deaths on our side and from the allied forces. For Vietnam, including civilians on the North and South's side it was over 1,000,000.

Today, we trade with Vietnam as it is a manufacturing hub, North and South joined together. No domino effect.

I mention it because it was a war that fit what President Eisenhower earlier said in a last speech:

On January 17, 1961, Dwight D. Eisenhower ends his presidential term by warning the nation about the increasing power of the military industrial complex.

Did we listen?

The Vietnam War impacted my generation and some a bit older or younger. The war touched all of us because of how the draft was deployed. Men had a number and their chances of being called up was related to a lottery. If he came from a district with a lot of men of that age, he was less likely than smaller districts. There were exemptions as there had been in earlier wars, but I am sure the Vietnam War impacted all of us at that time with the uncertainty.

After that, it was a mostly peaceful time in the United States until along came 9/11. By this time, the draft had been ended, but many joined as the US had been attacked and patriotism was part of the sign up. IF we have a future war, I don't know if that will be the case or if drafting enrollees will be back. People have to sign up for it but are not forced to join. I've read young women also.

Why do I equate wars with an issue? Because the government is behind wars, or they don't happen. Which candidate is most likely to be led into wars by the military industrial complex that Eisenhower knew a bit about considering his own history.

Besides maybe taking lives on both sides, what do wars do? I believe, as mentioned above, that the violence comes back like a fever or virus, whether someone served or not. It's like a fever in the air-- a mentality. PTSD leads to some of it, but I think the fact that we think war is important sometimes leads to thinking violence is a logical means to get what someone wants. I won't say wars are never needed, but I've read that many could be fended off if a culture acted sooner with other steps. Of course, not always given human nature...

Human nature comes into it with the military leaders. Some might support a war but not how it's being fought. Or not like the war for the same reason. Soldiers can lose ranks if they don't do as they are told-- at the least.

One more thing to add here, but not political. In some places, returning soldiers were treated very badly. I think we learned about that and it won't happen again; but wars are ugly things and to blame those you sent to fight it, is very wrong. Remember a large percentage in the Vietnam era never wanted to go, but even if they did, it's a war and it is savage. It's meant to be. Take that into account before blaming those who fight it. I also knew a man who volunteered to go back four times because of loyalty to the team he had fought with.

Since the United States began with a war, fought others to acquire land, and even fought a war against itself, definitely could make it an answer some would turn to. Can't blame that on politicians of today... unless reincarnation is true *s*.

For those who think that is different with the Ukraine and Russian wars where we just supply arms to keep it going and help the 'good' side; I suspicion those people will find out otherwise, too late as if we end up in WWIII, the United States itself will not be immune, not with the weapons that are out there today.

This went on way too long, and I have a lot more to say on the many possible issues that might lead to more violence in the homeland; so come back next Saturday if you find that of concern in your country or this one. If you have an opinion, feel free to voice it, agree or disagree.

Dreams: Visions and Reality

Photo from Montana

Once again, my idea for a blog is being rewritten by a dream, which led to an idea or maybe more accurately thoughts when I woke. Things I'd not have written otherwise.  Dream first.

Ranch Boss and I were leaving the small town closest to our farm. I saw a road turning up  a hill just past a small store. I wanted to walk up it. So we left our vehicle and proceeded up the narrow road. It was pretty with tall trees and lots of ivy. Most of the houses were still occupied but a few had been abandoned. Ivy entwined everywhere.

As we got closer to the top of the hill, we saw some of the usual piles of small limbs and brush that had been piled to burn in the fall. By this time, we knew no more homes would be and turned around. This time we saw what we had missed earlier. Roads and bulldozed clearings were where there had been trees and orchards. The cleared areas were massive, seemingly everywhere we looked.

Those people, who lived where we had passed coming up, had no clue what was about to happen as the roads in didn't pass their homes, but when apartment buildings and houses were built, as seemed obvious, their life would change in ways they couldn't have imagined. No chance to change any of it-- it was too late.

When I woke, I thought as I always do. What did that mean? I've driven that Oregon road many times, but the side road never. So, did the dream have a cultural or political meaning?

In Oregon, there were rules passed in 1973, which made it difficult to do what we had just seen in the dream. Farm land, timber, orchards were limited for development and that included private land and government. Vast tracts of land were protected from uses not intended to help the people but just to make money. The kind of development I've seen in other states including Arizona where I live much of the year and maybe soon,  permanently.

The thing about regulations is they can be good or bad. Some are in place simply to enrich others as a reward for what they have done. Supreme Court Justice Gorsuch said that such regulations can be good but also if they go too far, they can stifle needed growth (paraphrased). That's where having strong, honest, ethical leaders is so important-- not those paid off by someone with greed as a motive. How do we as voters determine which is which?

The Oregon leaders, like Tom McCall, who set environmental laws in place valued something more than dollars. They knew you can't eat dollars but rather must have places to buy what dollars can purchase. Imagine if those leaders had not existed then.

We don't have to imagine. We are seeing it, and it's not just one political party, wish it was. Ranch Boss and I have traveled across the United States from border to border and the Pacific to the Atlantic, both flying and driving. In many places, there are hodgepodge developments thrust wherever someone wished. It's not just close to cities but also in the middle of seemingly nowhere. There are places people can buy chunks of raw land where there is no water but just dreams.

What we see today so many places is where land is cut up with no more hope of making a living on it than those first homesteaders had, with many places too dry with no water. Who profits from that?

Another thing we see in Arizona is where other countries have bought land that they take the water to raise crops that will be sent to those countries. The water they use require deeper and deeper wells for those already there-- until the time there is no water down there.

Too often, ordinary folk have no power. In fact, even big ranches and farms owned by families are often forced to be subdivided or sold to the highest bidder. They are torn apart due to federal and state estate taxes if the owners have not found a way to protect their operations, sometimes of many generations.

In my opinion, right now, too many leaders, state or federal, use their positions to enrich themselves. Give me one reason why so many who come into office without a lot end up wealthy? If you don't know that's true, do some research.

When they run for office, they are all for the ordinary folk, but once in, it changes. Many may know that they are going to do that, but some may just be seduced. I don't know, but I do know we used to have leaders who could look ahead and see what was good for the people.

So, what does any of this mean, my dream or what came after? I guess that depends on what matters most to voters-- talk or actions.

Another thing-- is it too late to change what is happening like in my dream and a lot more? Voting is the only hope of which I can imagine changing things. Voting is when the little people do get a chance to make a difference. The thing is though what matters most-- short term or long term? We can't stop change. It's coming, but which direction?

Mr. Tarantula and the Spider Woman

Although last week was not the first time we saw a tarantula here, it was the most recent; and we'd been concerned about why not; writing about it led to some research. I knew the basics, but these are interesting spiders with multiple varieties and some behavior patterns I had not known.   The recent pictures are below as I know some people are afraid of spiders and instead I have photos of Spider Woman on top. Why she is 'Spider Woman' is in the story.

What I learned is that female tarantulas can live up to 30 years but the males usually just 10. The males right now are on the hunt for a mate and in some states like New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma, they can seem to be in massive numbers as they cross roads.

The tarantula photographed below is likely a male due to it being black. We don't think it is the Desert Tarantula as it would be brown. Instead it looked like the Tucson Bronze Tarantula, which the article said mostly is found in New Mexico. Males are black and females brown or tan. It's known to be gentle and often the one made into a pet. No thanks for me, but I like seeing them outside. There are ten species of tarantulas in the United States.

The hair on their bodies actually can be weapons if they are being attacked as they evidently throw them like a spear. There are spiders that are dangerous to humans, but they are not the tarantulas in this country. We decide something is evil often by how it appears. That's not always a good way to judge...

The stories below come from when we first bought Casa Espiritu. That was over twenty years ago and Ranch Boss was working at the company where  he'd been for 24 years and then as a consultant for a variety of start up companies. That meant we didn't live here all the time; and sometimes, I lived here alone while he was at the farm or on business trips.

At Casa Espiritu, I had various jobs to do outside. One involved cleaning out the outdoor wildlife pool and then cementing some holes in it. As I did it, I moved the sculpture you saw above. (At that time, I did sculptures of all sizes, she is one of the largest. I had to shape her in two pieces; so she could be fired in our kiln. Her clay is 'high-fire' for outdoor works. She came with us to Tucson).

When I moved her, an angry tarantula scurried out from underneath as it had been his or her home. I quickly restored the sculpture where it had been and apologized. That's when the sculpture got its name, very apropos for Native American mythology-- Spider Woman. I don't know if the tarantula ever returned but she was used by other small critters over the years, one of whom gnawed the hole you now see in the photo.

My second adventure with a tarantula came out by our swimming pool where I was watering the plants. I saw a tarantula being chased by a Tarantula Hawk. Knowing these large wasps kill tarantulas, I turned my hose into a spray and let the wasp have a big dose, allowing the spider to at least escape that time.

I knew that the way the wasps killed them seemed brutal to me. They  inject a poison into the tarantula that paralyzes it legs and pincers, then it would drag its body to its burrow where it'd lay its egg in it. When the baby hatched, it would eat the still living tarantula... I know everything has to live but ugh. I did give a scant concern to it turning on me, but that's why I hit it long and hard. I've read they hurt when they sting humans, but they don't paralyze or kill us.

Our most recent sighting of a tarantula was outside my window when Ranch Boss saw it, staring in. He got the camera and took some photos. I suppose it was out looking for a mate. Although it didn't seem to mind being photographed, it also didn't hang around. Mostly they live underground except when looking for prey or a mate.

Here is a link to more info on them if you are not spider avoiders.  https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-13781945/Thousands-male-tarantulas-three-states-mate-female.html

Dreams and Topics

Last blog, I said this one would not be on political thinking... I meant it at the time and had a blog from something at our desert home, but then a dream happened. I don't ever ignore dreams and what they might be telling me; so I'll share that here-- well, part of it.

A person is trying to get a friend to change their bad habits. They might say they would but then it'd not happen. There are two ways someone might change. One is love of someone. Another is reading something that convinces that person this is going the wrong way.

Well, there is a third when they see it for themselves and the change then is more permanent.

Then I realized this applies to a country when it's going the wrong way. It has to see it for itself, cannot be forced from outside as it won't last.

When I woke up, I knew this applied to my country with its massive debt, which last I read was $34 trillion. Let that sink in as to how much money that is; and although we are a wealthy country, by many measures, what does it mean to owe that much? Who does the government owe it to? More on that below.

When the Fed increases the money supply, which is part of its job description when needed, what does that mean for inflation or the value of the dollar?

People talk about inflation but what causes our dollars to be worth less and less? I have some books I bought years and years ago that cost under $2 (price still on the cover) that today would be $20. Was it that they cost more to make, or the lack of value in my dollars-- more likely they cost more because dollars were worth less? When America went off the gold standard, supposedly for trade and freedom of marketing, what replaced it? A nebulous concept of the country's net worth? Who decided that?

I am no economist and only know what I read, which can go many different directions. but I do understand our dollars are constantly losing value.

When Congress figured out it could borrow from the Social Security Trust Fund, it forgot to clarify how it'd pay it back or if it would. When Congress made a law that it did not have to vote in their own wage increase but instead it was automatic with cost of living, it left out the rest of us, including SS, which is supposed to relate to cost of living, but not what people need to buy but rather a lot of other things that don't relate to the real cost of living for the elderly.

Our biggest debt holders were China and Japan. Added of course, with ourselves with bonds, which get paid when and by whom? What if we can't pay?

Finally, do either of the current Presidential candidates have proposals for the debt or is it all about gimmes to voters, which will get them votes? That should not have been a question. Who is seriously looking at the debt or will that all come after disaster strikes, and we know it can based on other countries. BUT not on my watch is all many care about...

They might though care about this if they took the time to look, which I doubt. If you want to see how inflation might be linked to money supply, check out this link that Ranch Boss found: How M1 Money Supply and Inflation are Linked.  Research it further if inflation is of concern to you.

image on top is one of our barrel cactus. Such fun to watch them take on their full identities.

Do citizens want socialism as their government?

Let's start with defining socialism as I think some don't get its full meaning. Here it is from the dictionary:

a system of society or group living in which there is no private property,

a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state.
I believe that socialism starts one way, which might seem innocuous but what do the people behind those beginning steps truly want? Step by steps freedoms can be lost for free speech or many other things.

As soon as someone says socialism, some bring up libraries. Clearly that's not socialism but instead social programs that citizens want to pay to benefit all. Government does not dictate what can be in a library-- or it has not...

Another socialist argument is that Scandinavian countries are socialist. Not from all I've read, where they call themselves a socialist democracy and say they are a free market, capitalistic society, with loose regulations favoring corporations doing well. Check it out.

For those who want businesses and corporations run by government agencies, what do you think they know about producing products? We have seen how it works in our country when government dictates which businesses get their spoils, often determined these days by lobbyists, and who donated to the powers that be.

Most politicians will not admit they want to turn this country socialistic (with some exceptions) as Americans have valued freedom and been leery of too much control in the hands of a powerful government. Or, that was at one time true, like when the Constitution and Bill of Rights were written by those with experience. Is it still true today, or might Americans value what they see as comfort and security as more important?

Once we elect someone, it's hard to turn things around if they have been lying or only saying what they believe people want to hear.

In the case of the various candidates, we can look at the record especially of the Vice Presidential candidate, since he was a governor. We have the words of the Presidential candidate, from earlier discussions. How many look? With the ex-president, we can look at his record when he was in office.

We might or might not like what that was; but if we check, not just listen to more rhetoric from enemies, we have some chance to see the results. These days, it pays to check records more than one place as lies are flying from all sides.

My real question is how many Americans want socialism without understanding it might be on the road to less personal autonomy? Socialism grows and usually it takes totalitarianism to enforce the less popular rules.

Do people today vote issues or is it all personalities, with one nicer and the other not so much?

Are Americans interested in choosing leaders based on DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion)? I've heard that is racism where it comes to the Presidential candidate. If so, it's what the current President said he was using to make his pick -- woman and black.

If Americans were to look at issues, which ones would they care about? More on that to come although not next time. I have something from our desert home to share next Saturday. I can't do politics constantly as I need breaks and don't want to make it feel like pressure here. I don't feel that way at all, even though I know some on either side do feel that way for those who do not vote as they believe is correct.

We all need to vote our conscience, but I just want to be sure voters are thinking what is best for them and the country. Do not be fooled by rhetoric as they all know how to use it.

And now it begins

Although I have politics above this blog as one possible topic, I have rarely written about it and thought I'd explain why and then why I am going to do it more often now-- although not with every blog.

The reasons I haven't are several with varying importance into their impact on my actions regarding this blog. These are not in order.

First up is that people read here from around the world with varying types of political impact in their own countries. I do read about other countries and what's going on like with Bangladesh. I don't though understand all that is beyond what I hear is happening. Not much for many to relate to our political situation in the United States although they might more than we know.

Second comes me not knowing what is behind a lot of what I see going on. Many buy propaganda when it's from their own side at least, I've always been more skeptical. That does not  help my life but it's a reality for someone who has always been accused of thinking too much. Maybe, but it is what it is. So, if I don't see the motives behind the actions, I am cautious on what to write.

An example for that was what I was told, when I started to vote, millennia ago.  President Johnson was beginning a war on poverty. See any results? Where did the money go? It tends to lead to cynicism with political rhetoric. Any of it. Words are cheap. Actions less so.

Third is my reluctance to try to tell others what they should think. I can tell them the facts as I know them to be and the conclusion it led for me; but what should they do? I know bloggers and pundits who want to tell us all of that. They are so sure and joyful in that surety. It's not my philosophy. Well, except when I am writing a book. Then those characters better do what I have seen for them. *s*

Fourth, I don't want to upset people with my own political beliefs. I don't like losing readers, which I do sometimes anyway, but what if what I write upsets their emotions. I know most already are likely set in their ways and what I write is nothing to them. The thing is I don't want to take responsibility for what they should think. Only one way is right? That is true for some folks but not for me. The other thing is, as an independent, I am bound to upset folks on both set of our spectrum.

Fifth, I believe we have to be careful what we say in a time where all we put out is surveilled. You think a small blog wouldn't be of interest? I have no idea but that is why a lot of us want to keep our heads down. When you speak out in a public venue, well, your head is no longer down, but does it matter? I don't know.

SO, why politics now? Because it seems really important as to what direction our country will go and a big shift could be ahead. We have two candidates and their partners from totally opposite sides of the divide. A lot of people get all their information from their own bubbles. Since I read both sides, I can at least be sure they heard what I doubt they'd get otherwise. Of course, that is also why they might stop reading here.

Voting in November will determine a lot, with those on both sides mad if they lose. They'll be angry with anyone who they know voted wrong. I know all that but still feel too much is at stake. More on that next week.

Delayed Saturday

Best laid plan of mice and men is rather famous as a quote but its origin is tougher to find. Maybe Burns the poet. Maybe Steinbeck the author. Anyway it fits my whole last week.

First of all, I don't think I've never not posted something on a Saturday. I usually plan them ahead. Well. I didn't post Saturday and it came from two plans thwarted. One to not get sick, but I did. Then to feel good enough to think up and type and idea. Didn't happen.

So plan now is to feel better all week. Another one is to find a local doctor as we are back in Tucson and short of another change of plans, I'll be here for a while and the doctor in Oregon not only retired by his clinic dropped us for not being there within three years. Interesting how you get punished for not being sick; but back to the plans thing. I did get sick but on the way up where we had to turn around.

So not much to say though I am thinking plenty on the political situation in my country. More on that when I feel more like typing

flowers and change

Because soon, too soon frankly, we will have to head north, through heat and storms, pulling our trailer, to the Pacific Northwest, and our farm, with work to be done... I am not sure how the blog will fare... or me lol.

I want to keep the blog going but internet will be dicey. A lot has gone on recently with an attempted assassination and then a president deciding not to run again and a new presidential candidate, I don't honestly know what to say here. The world looks at this and wants to know what Americans might think-- i know this from what I see on my list of countries from around the world.

Quite simply, I do not have answers, let alone for my own life. I am just happy we have neighbors around us who look after the Arizona property when we have to be gone-- no real advantage to owning properties in two states so far apart. I hope next Saturday I'll have something to write... maybe lol

Texas Ranger, by our pool, enjoyed the recent storms, for a second lush bloom, and will be here when we are not-- along with the bees. These are likely the ones they call killer bees but when feeding happily, they have no interest in stinging.

It is actually a xeriscape plant but loves when the storms deliver.  Bees, also agree as they load up on pollen.

allegories and dreams

Dealing with a migraine, the kind that gives me vision issues as well as the headache, I wanted to get this blog started. Hope it will make sense. My life has upheaval ahead, maybe like the monsoons we are having here in Arizona. I don't know how that will impact the blog, but I can get this one out... I hope lol

BTW, that last storm, which led to damage of trees, etc. (they called the results tornadoes but to me they seemed like microbursts but damage can be the same). Here, at Casa Espiritu, we got 4/10" of rain and no real damage but lots of wind. I love the amazing clouds this time of year-- damage not so much.

When we bought our little desert home, we came up with its name fairly fast and it was Casa Espiritu.  We had barely lived here when we knew it and it has very much lived up to that name is so many ways.

One of those is for dreams. I had one last night where I didn't like the dream's subject but knew it was allegorical. I spent some time thinking on that and Ranch Boss added to it his thoughts. The dream itself was full of imagery that I didn't like and had no idea from here it had come. I won't repeat it. I'll just tell you what I think it meant.

The animals in the dreams were used to being fed. What they were given was not actually nutritious for them but it's all they knew. I think we can be that way but about more than food and instead ideas and how we think.

clouds and philosophy

is this more politics? I don't think so, but I do believe more citizens need to figure out what are issues and then how does each one impact their lives and that of others. I have my own definition for important issues to me, but they won't fit others obviously.

For many women, abortion is all that matters and that can be on either side of the law regarding it. Although it is important to me, I have grandchildren of an age to be drafted should the US go to war. Having come of age when Vietnam impacted many, I remember how wars can be only popular with war mongers (not usually fighting them) or those who make money from them. Eisenhower, who knew a bit about wars warned on the latter.

Currently, I have read that not enough young people, of the age, are joining up, which means, if a real war with our enemies erupts, look for a draft. I heard but don't know if it's true but Democrats want women/girls to also be drafted. I guess that depends on how they are used as to how others might see that. There are countries, like Israel and Switzerland, that do expect both sexes to serve in the military for a specific set of time. How you see it might depend on the age of your kids or grandkids.

So avoiding wars is a big deal to me, it's hard to say who might lead us into one or avoid one. It's a big issue that does relate a lot to who the leader is. With modern weapons as they are, don't count on those wars not touching your country and your loved ones-- draft age or not.

Another issue to me that matters a lot is illegal immigration. If you are one who wants to hire cheap manual laborers, like for fruit picking, landscaping, maid service, you may like the idea of cheaper costs. Some don't even know who their landscaping firm is using, handy to avoid guilt.

BUT what about others who come in only to commit crimes, as they've heard we are easy pickings. Or worse yet, since they come from around the world, what about wantabe terrorists? When we have an open border, it's hard to sort out who is coming from good solid, wantabe citizens and those latter types. A lot of this impacts poor communities more than richer ones.

Education is a big one for me though for now, my family is more or less though the system. What does it mean to us, as a people, to know what other children are being taught. It's unlikely now the simple ABCs. What philosophy are they being given as the right one for life? Some schools deny parents access to what that might be.

There are more issues for me (a lot more), but you get the general idea.

The photos interspersed here came from our bedroom view of the clouds and in particular the Stairway to Heaven, which I always look for but rarely see. I guess, it's more officially called an Alto Cumulus, which amazes me but then I don't name clouds.

Monsoons bring in a lot of interesting formations. I think this stairway lasted less than half an hour. Time isn't always a wasting. We may be living in such a time. Who controls our fates?

Voting as cultural issue

our photo when the saguaro yields its fruit for the birds, eventually animals, and insects-- in the fullness of time.

Following along with the theme of the last blog, this one is again about what is happening in our country and how is it portrayed by the internet. The difference is I want to explain a bit about my background, something we rarely know about those giving opinions.

I've mentioned before that I was a registered Democrat from the time I was allowed to vote until 2018 when I left the party over issues where I simply didn't like how it was going. I didn't see a way to be a Republican either for the same reasons-- hence unaffiliated, which means I can't vote in Oregon primaries. It was worth it to me as I am an issues voter and always have been, though I've seen how partisan groups use these issues in ways I just don't get.

So, why get into this now? Two big ones arose within the last week. One a presidential debate and its aftermath and the second a Supreme Court decision, also impacting the Presidency of the United States. The fall out has been great and not yet really decided; but to me, the big thing is how what happened has been presented, especially to those who get all their news from one side or the other of whatever happens.

First, I did not watch the debate. I do not watch political speeches and debates are all about rhetoric. I did though see the first answer Biden gave. I saw no sign of the cold they later claimed he had. I also saw the answer as vague and again political spiel. I turned it off before Trump spoke.

The political rhetoric the next morning was not surprising to me. They did accept that Biden did poorly and lost his train of thought frequently, but their big point was Trump lied a LOT. What they never tell is what were the lies and also who declared them to be lies. Might two people, on different sides of the political divide see truth differently? I guess if you are on one side or the other, you don't care.

Now, it's been a week since the debate and the excuses for Biden's performance have grown. Who believes them? Pretty much those who want to.

The question asked was one debate a big deal. Probably not if there hadn't been so much talk before it about what was going on with his cognitive reasoning. Where powerful people often get others to cover for them will we ever know the truth? We sure know the spin if we care to look.

Biden has evidently declared he'll have no events after 8pm. So what if it's an emergency?

Second big issue was the Supreme Court decision on presidential immunity. This one went right along party lines-- despite Roberts saying earlier that the court is not partisan. Maybe only he believes that.

Afterwards, the panic started from the left. Maddow fears seal teams sent after political enemies. She also said she wondered if she could be sent to a concentration camp? Apparently no concern if Biden stays in power or Harris, which is the latest question brought up. What about her for President if he passes on running. It depends on how much attention you have paid to her political career as you probably see it.

The fear of Trump for wars or worse determines a lot of how someone sees all of this. The fact that he avoided wars when in office does not prove the future reactions, and frankly what he did after his loss is not reassuring to anybody-- or should not be.

A big question also involves the Heritage Foundations 2025 Project and how much will it impact what Trump tries to do. If you don't know what that is, you might want to look it up. Do we want a religiously controlled country? Earlier citizens did not. What about today? I have read Trump does not agree with it, but these days how do we know what we can trust?

If Biden resigns as a candidate, then who picks up the mantle? Supposedly, most likely is his vice president. How do voters feel about that? I keep coming back to a quote that she has used many times with great pride. "what can be, unburdened by what has been." What the heck does that mean? I also resent how the Democratic party would not do debates earlier to avoid all of this coming out right at the last with little time to look at other options.

I think the Supreme Court decision made sense with the limitations it imposed. For immunity, it had to be a part of the presidential duties-- not personal issues. I've listened to those who claim it could be anything, but that's not what they said. It will be further defined probably and likely satisfy no one.

Does any of this say anything about how I will vote in November-- and I always vote? Not really, I am an issues voter and I haven't written about those this time around. It's a disturbing time, and I just want to be sure voters are informed and not just propagandized.

How do you see it?

image from Stencil-- does it relate to the blog? Must it?

I wrote this before the debate Thursday night. I will let it go because it's about how people tend to trust social and mainstream media without researching. I might later write more about the debate next week or maybe not lol...

The United States had been embroiled in a kerfuffle, which might seem minor but maybe matters more than it could seem. One thing that I believe is part of the problem goes beyond the words said and ends up with interpretations of what it was supposed to mean. It actually goes back many years to earlier such arguments about family makeup and responsibilities.

This is now not much of a story, as so often happens, big deals end up buried under new big deals (which will also disappear with a bit of time). But to start this blog, I want to share the original words from Harrison Butker at the graduation ceremony at a Catholic College, St. Benedictine, that tipped this all off, then some thoughts I have on the whole topic. As I expand on my own thinking, I hope you will refer back to this for your own thoughts.

"For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you. How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.

I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother. I'm on the stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation. I'm beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.

She is a primary educator to our children. She is the one who ensures I never let football or my business become a distraction from that of a husband and father. She is the person that knows me best at my core, and it is through our marriage that, Lord willing, we will both attain salvation.

I say all of this to you because I have seen it firsthand how much happier someone can be when they disregard the outside noise and move closer and closer to God's will in their life. Isabelle's dream of having a career might not have come true, but if you asked her today if she has any regrets on her decision, she would laugh out loud, without hesitation, and say, “Heck, No.'"

If someone has been following this subject, you already know the way the words have been distorted to suggest he doesn't value women getting an education. Some have said he tells women they should stay home with their babies. In my reading of that, he didn't say that either. I think he wanted them to look for possible alternatives to work outside the home and expressed how important it has been to his family, again in his opinion.

When he refers to his wife's role as a vocation, he is giving homemaking a seriousness that it doesn't always get-- and that is true whether the parents also have outside vocations. To see homemaking as a lot more than dusting furniture... or not, gives it importance that deserves respect when done well.

More on this coming eventually  (not sure when) as when I first thought of it, I hadn't thought how complex it really was and blogs should not get too long. The main point here was how original words ended up distorted on many topics.

Oh and one more thing. This is Ranch Boss's birthday. Happy birthday to a great husband, father to our kids, caring grandfather, and to his parents. Actually, he's a good guy all the way around, even if we do sometimes get in an argument *s*

Out of our control or not?

(image from stencil of old woman and the desert)

It seemed to me after speaking about our dreams and feeling of lack of control, I should expand a bit on what I meant about lack of control.

First up came the subject of immigration, which is actually impacting most so-called developed nations. I don't know how others see it, but here's my take. I am concerned about uncontrolled entering of our sovereign (some hate that word) countries, where there are agreed upon borders and rules for entry to these countries. That has all been exploded recently with many people, some impacted by climate change or violent crime, are taking sometimes grave risks (sometimes not so much) to get to a country that many of them see as more prosperous/safer than their own.

For the countries, where they are arriving, there are different views on how they see it with fear, not enough jobs, not enough government benefits, limited available housing, and assorted other concerns. As for myself, I just want the entry to be orderly with those who want to be citizens where they are arriving.

Likewise, with better border controls, is making sure the arrivals aren't bringing illegal drugs or weapons. I am all for a border fence although it's a concern for wild creatures used to access for water and food. What are good answers for these concerns? I wish more responsible leaders were working for those answers and not just using them for political gain.

Naturally, I am concerned with potential wars where governments want to force the young to fight them. I was born toward the end of WWII, was a child when the talk was of the Cold War. We had school shelters in the basements where we were supposed to go if there was a nuclear attack. Kind of humorous if you think of it. I grew to adulthood during the Vietnam era and hence have seen what can happen. Wars should not be fought to make money for some while others die. To go to war,we need to have solid reasons but too often we have not.

As for other concerns where I feel no control... try old age lol. We really can't know how it'll be for us once we reach elderly years. I won't go into details here but I think most have a good idea of what they can be. The quote by a movie star that old age is not for sissies stands still true. But what is our choice short of dying early-- not one I would have chosen.

Dreams and lack of control

Dreams can be forgotten, by many, or interpreted, sometimes by someone else. Once in a while, I think they need to be shared, which is what I hope to do here with dreams from this week. (image from Stencil)

I was very upset when I woke from this dream. I seemed to be planning to watch a show on television. This is something I don't actually do as I quit watching the TV a couple of years ago.

In the dream, I had turned a show on to see what it was going to do next. It's not a show I watch in my daytime, but dreams can do what they want. It had brought in a new hero and he was very weird looking, to say the least. He was a regular man but he had what looked like spider feet out his back. Yuck and how does that make a hero???

The show then changed to cartoons, not like Disney but more like the Simpsons (again not a show I had seen other than clips from it). I thought that's ridiculous. I tried to turn it off but could not. I couldn't turn off the TV either; so I switched channels.

Another weird type show from something that seemed beyond normal. At that point, I was feeling panic when I could not stop it. That's when I woke with that panicked feeling. When we both woke, I told Ranch Boss the dream and how upsetting it had been. Normally my dreams are just fine but this was not.

He then told me his dream of the same time, right before waking. He owned a bigger ranch than we have and it was being overrun by people, who had the freedom to walk where they chose, use what they wanted. That went so far as going to build a set of homes on our land that they didn't own, but again, nothing to stop them.

We realized that both or our dreams indicated a lack of personal control. We have felt some of that feeling in our lives. Upsetting to feel you can't really control what is happening, not only in your life, country, but also the world. This is really not a good time to be an empath.

I felt a lot of panic, not unusual for me with anxiety attacks a norm for a number of  years.

But, then, something else happened, that afternoon, where on a fluke, a momentary impulse, Ranch Boss looked out our bedroom window and was aware a small rodent was in our swimming pool, with no real way for it to get out short of drowning. He rushed out there and with the net, he scooped the little critter out to dry land, where it ran off. It had been a very lucky baby ground squirrel.

So... we might not have much control over a lot of what is happening, but we can do what we can and for some being, it might be the difference between life and death. I don't have an answer for how to stop the feelings of panic at lack of control, but that little baby able to run away did help some.

do we want a partisan legal system?

   image from Stencil

Some people wondered what would happen with the jury in the recent trial of the United States' ex-president. I mean, the evidence was dicey, the key witness a known, proven liar with a grudge, but I didn't wonder because I'd been reading various legal experts who said that based on the potential jury pool, it was a done deal regardless of the fact that many have paid off people with what is known as NDAs (Nondisclosure agreements). Even our Congress has a so-called shush fund, where nobody can access it but people are paid off to keep quiet.

So, I figured the ex-president would be found guilty. After all, that DA had run on getting him. He kept the trial in a region where there were virtually 94+% of democrats and those who wanted to see that ex in prison. Add to it a judge with the same mentality and a daughter making money working for so-called progressive causes.

The former leader was found guilty with evidently continuing a gag order (even though that was supposed to protect a jury pool, and that is past). The judge set up a date for sentencing that is 4 days before the 'other' parties convention.

Because I had read that the judge's instructions to the jury virtually demanded they find a verdict of guilty, I made the effort to find those instructions and read them. Believe me, they are lengthy. A lot was legalese, but the key sentence that got me ... as although the jury had to find intent, they did not have to find motive. Interesting, as from what I read motive was key to why it was criminal. ... In other words, if he was doing it to protect his wife or family, not a crime. But if it was related to the election it would be. So motive suddenly didn't matter?

Could any of this be more obviously about a partisan legal system? Not to me, but for some of the country, it was a perfect trial and justice finally was served. Wait until this happens to their chosen candidate in another equally biased district in the United States.

Some say it's a banana republic where you take out your political enemies not with votes but rather with the legal system. It kind of looks that way to many of us who may not be right wingers but are in the middle.

Will this political candidate be taken out by being put in jail? Do we have a fair judicial system or is it truly partisan? I'd say it depends on in what part of the country you live.

It's not new. Remember when one political candidate had destroyed their devices so nobody could find what was on them. Oh, couldn't charge them since they were a candidate for the highest office! How about another that they couldn't charge because they were too feeble?

This does not just happen at the highest levels of government. Here's a little partisan story from Oregon. A farm family started a fire to destroy noxious weeds on their property but it got away from them and burned some property in federal saved land, national reserve. There were charges brought but in the local area, they were dismissed (locals understood how this could happen). Not good enough for the federal government who then brought their charges and jailed the father and son-- in a way to practically doom their chances of keeping their land. Until a President pardoned them, the very one now who is facing jail time potentially.

I read some of the pundit elites saying that this recent trial was perfect.  Others claim it proves our legal system works... Well, does it, or does it depend on from where you come...

In my opinion, there should be a non-partisan legal system, but one of the lawyers, who claimed this trial was rigged from the start, said if that jury had let the ex-president off, they'd be heckled in their homes. He knew about that because it has happened to him when he called out for Constitutional grounds as a basis... Even though, he isn't in ex-president's party nor voted for him. He just wanted Constitutional grounds to be the basis to protect us all. I don't feel very protected right now, and if you do, I can guess to which political party you belong. It might not stay that way; so think about it.

Politics-- so beware!

 Stencil mystery orb

When I thought of writing about the recent happening in the United States, I wanted time to think from where I was coming on it and what I believed I knew. I never imagined I would begin with how I am feeling right now where it comes to my country and our government. Then I had a dream last night and decided that was where to begin.

The dream was me standing on a kind of sidewalk with a concrete fence between it and what appeared to be the ocean. People were all excited, jubilant even with their eagerness to board a boat. I think it was supposed to be a ship but didn't appear quite that large to me, I watched as the boat took off.

When it was off, away from the dock, and still the people on board seemed gay and then it was apparent something went wrong with that ship and I saw it break in half, soon to sink into the water. People on the shore were horrified and tried to save the people who were drowning. They got some, but I looked in the water and those joyful people were under the water, clearly dead. End of dream.

When I woke, I wondered what that might mean in a dream as I never have fortunetelling dreams. I have a dream dictionary and found this as one possible part. "To dream that a ship has crashed or sunk suggests that you are feeling emotionally out of control. You are expressing some fear or uncertainly within your emotional state. You are afraid of losing something close to you because of certain difficulties."

I think this does represent how I feel right now where it comes to not just my country, but the world. I don't write about it here because I want to be as positive as I can. My theory has been-- what good does it do to speak negatively unless you can do something about the problem. Well, I can't change what seems to me that has gone wrong.

On the other hand, as an old woman, I've seen a lot of life go by. I know that something seems weird about what I am told I now must accept-- and I've been feeling that for a while. Who is it telling us what we must accept as truth?

It was in 2018, when my husband and I both left the political party to which we had belonged since we first could vote. We felt it was going the wrong direction. Still, could we join the other main party? Not really, which left us unaffiliated. A better place to be for now, but it doesn't change our great concerns for what's happening in terms of values and ethics in our world.

I am told that an open United States border, with just anyone coming through, is okay. No matter how many and from where.

I am told that when a woman wins a race, and she looks like a man, for me to see that means I am a bigot.

I am told that caring about a spiraling federal budget is stupid.

I am told that when one candidate tells a lie, it matters; but when another does, it's okay.

I am told that seeing one party get away with whatever they want to do is fine (destroying a Blackberry, paying someone to lie about the other candidate), again, just fine.

I could go on but it's irritating me just thinking about it, let alone listing it all. As for what is irritating me now, I'll share that in the next blog. Be aware, this is all political. Unfortunately now, it's not just what I see that has triggered me this time-- but how really divided we appear to be as a people for what we think is okay-- not to mention those chortling with glee at what just happened and I am wondering-- so what country do I live in?

change of plans

For June 1st, I had a blog all set up and then something happened in the United States that made it all not seem as important as the new kerfuffle (which does not mean small but instead just a disagreement as to what was best).

I then wanted to write about it, but i need more time to ruminate over it as I come up with so many angles that it makes me frustrated. Hence, short blog today and more as my brain settles down on what I most want to say.

This quote though might give you a clue. I guess it's from Stalin and one of his henchmen. "Show me the man and I'll find you the crime."

More on this as it comes to me.
