Quail update

by Rain Trueax

Something uplifting, I hope, in a dark time. The quail are growing up and increasingly independent of their parents, who may be working on a new brood. The older quail babies are less flighty than the newborns, of which we also have some but they don't spend long at the quail block.

These are wild, right? I wish we could see quail here. They have pretty much disappeared due to hunting and predation and loss of habitat. That dove gives a nice feel for size.

yes, they are wild. The doves are not as nice as the quail. The male doves can seem like monsters with how they ruffle up their necks.. We do have a quail trying to raise a few above our front porch. When the males bond, they take responsibility for building the nest and feed their offspring

What a lovely landscape and soundscape, so different from ours. The sparrow flying in was a funny shock. I once kept the domesticated quail for their eggs, but never again. Truly wild and the males were so noisy, if they escaped the run you could hardly catch them.

I've had quail at nearly every house, they are a joy to watch. There maybe some here as well, as there is plenty of cover and the wide open of the community garden area is close by. On occasion I hear coyotes there at dusk.
