Doonesbury and the abortion furor

The party who wants us to make our own choices, who believes in independence and freedom, that party is doing all they can to take choices from women regarding contraceptives and abortion. This last week Doonesbury, written by G. B. Trudeau, presented an informative series on abortion that many newspapers (including the Portland Oregonian) decided was just too tough for tender-hearted Americans to see. Well not to mention it might remind people who really wants to take away our freedoms.

After making it clear what he'd do about abortion choice and contraceptives, Santorum is heading next for pornography. If he gets the power to do it as president, one can only guess at what he'll consider pornography.  Religious freedom will doubtless be next. Oh, not your right to be a christinist but your right to criticize what passes for Christianity today.

So I decided, since I always read Doonesbury online anyway (we cannot get a paper delivered out here-- other than the day after by mail), I would copy them all and put them onto my Picasa site for as long as I can as I don't know how copyright laws work for this kind of thing.

This series is a good reminder of what is at stake with this election. Don't dare tell me Republicans believe in freedom. Maybe for themselves but sure not for women! We've seen it in state after state and if any of this bunch of front-running Republican candidates get in office, it'll be federal next!

Thank you, Garry Trudeau for your courage in taking on the tough fights as you do again and again to the dismay and disdain of the right wing in this country. There is nothing obscene in this set of cartoons except that we have come to this point and brought to it by the party who supposedly touts their belief in freedom and independence. Who knows what will be next if they gain federal power.

These came from Slate which is where I regularly read Doonesbury as the only cartoon I follow anymore.

Copyright may be an issue. You must be sure to create back links at the very least.

If I am asked, I'll take them down but they are on my private site which is available only through the link. I have seen a lot more than this being shared, but I try to be sensitive to the issue. Sending links to each one individually would mean nobody would go see them. My guess is most have seen them somewhere anyway. Since I copied the images, there is no backlink beyond the site where they are which is there. The reason I didn't post the pictures here was both to make sure nobody came across them by accident, and that I felt if I did post them, then there would be an issue. We shall see. There are many who don't want them seen to say the least. These days everybody should follow Doonesbury as his satire is spot on.

DRAT! They are too small for me to read..BUT, I know GT's Heart is in our corner.

Suddenly, I'm feeling like I am living in Nazi Germany in the early 1930's, or some other country that wants to "tame" me, as if I/Me and other women, were wild animals.....This doesn't feel like "love".

Forgive me, but I think these REPUBLICAN MEN truly and basically HATE women!!!

And I want to say to them: Get Your Boot Off My Neck!

My sentiments exactly, Naomi. And if you follow the link to Slate, they have them there with a larger size possible if you hit the link. I think they are worth seeing even though I am sure you can imagine what he's illustrating.

I hadn't seen them as our local newspaper also decided to drop the column, instead re-running older ones. From what the editor said I thought they were sexually graphic but that isn't the case. They do name names and the names of groups though, who definitely seem to want to control women.

Nazi Germany ? Please say that I didn't read that statement. If I felt that way I would leave the country! As for GT, he has an agenda. However, wr all do in one way or another.

Interesting statement, anonymous. So you would not stay and work to get your country back? You'd run? Where would you run to? I think when we see our own nation going a way we find unacceptable, the answer is work to get it to what we want. That's what the Tea Party did. It's what Occupy is trying to do. When someone tells me I should get out if I don't like things as they are, I suggest that's for what they hope; so they can gain control. No thanks. It's not too late to turn things around, to educate people as to the meaning of government, of what we can do. We can do what earlier generations did-- work for what we believe. We thought the cultural battles were over, those of us who are elders. It's kind of surprising to realize I guess they never are.

We can also reveal the truth, over and over again, of what is actually happening and what it means. That is what Trudeau did with these cartoons. He illustrated the reality some women are facing today in states that think this way. And it could well be the nation if we end with an extreme rightie as president with that group in control of the House and Senate. That's a reality. What is supposition is how far it will go. Most of us never dreamed it would go as far as it has...
