Chickens come home to roost

Awhile back Matt Taibbi wrote a good article for Rolling Stone describing what he saw as going on with the Republican party:

That these kind of candidates would rise to the top of the Republican party tells me that Republicans who are more moderate have let their party be shanghaied. Barry Goldwater would be a moderate or even a liberal to this bunch.

You moderates, want it back? Then do something because the haters, the religious zealots, and the shallow thinkers are doing something-- they're running with the ball.

Their supposed moderate choice, Mitt Romney, is out there pandering so far to the right that he sounds like an extremist more than any moderate I know. By now everyone has heard Romney saying he'd end Planned Parenthood if he gets in office. Now unless we assume that's another lie, here is a man who once supported it (many moderate Republicans did as about responsibility and wise use of resources) and his wife donated to it. Now he claims it will be one of the first things he jettisons.

The sad part is when 'their chickens come home to roost (like Arizona now making it legal to fire a woman for using birth control-- guess it's okay when it's a man whose wife used it), it's the poor and disadvantaged who will pay the highest price.

Or these states who want to put a woman wanting an abortion through hell before she can get it-- if they can't ban it totally. (Doonebury is doing quite a number on that and I am copy-pasting them all to eventually post a link so that if your paper doesn't, you can read what many don't want you to see-- a truth many don't want to face!)

Really-- you right of middle people can vote for any of these guys??? Oh okay, it's not your birth control they are going after. Give them time!

The middle is no longer in the middle - it has moved to the right over the past 60 years!

I have friends who are GOP supporters and we do not discuss this, but I do wonder how they let the party sink to this level and why they do not fight to bring it back. Do you have a link to the AZ law?

I did not have a link as I heard it on several cable news programs but I went looking for it and found this from Daily Kos with a list of the measures and what they would do-- Arizona out crazies crazies. I don't suppose it could pass but I love Arizona, have a second home there, and this just drives me nuts as the people I know there aren't like this and yet it gives the country the impression (as have other issues) that the whole state is full of extreme righties. Unfortunately too many of them are or there'd not be these kind of legislators...

my parents are GOP, and they despair of where the party has gone...and have no clue how to get it back. Mom just mutters that "somebody needs to fix this." In any event, they won't switch to democratic party, so just like I do many times as a dem, I hold my nose and vote for the a**hole anyway.

I don't remember the guy's name, but saw a news story yesterday that there is a Republican in congress who is saying there has got to be increased taxes on the very wealthy. The new pundits are already saying that guy has cooked his goose with the GOP -- and they're probably correct. Sad.

This link truly belongs with the crazies-- How Sarah Palin hopes to use a brokered convention. Don't kid yourself it couldn't happen-- not if you have listened to what the crowds cheer at these debates. If she does get the convention packed with believers in her, if she milks the excitement of the crowd as she has before, don't count this out!

I try not to pay attention to this stuff because it fills me with so much despair. I'm glad that you have the stamina and stomach for it. Someone has to keep a watchful eye on the scene, if only to relay the awful news to the rest of us. Thank you for that. I'm not sure that anything can be done, but I'm leaning toward a replay of Lysistrata and women kicking some serious butt in November.

Yep you are so right! uh read that CORRECT! I, as you know if you have followed me for any length of time, am a reformed Republican...I vorted Democrat last election, because I just did not fit what I thought the Republican agenga was. I had either changed drastically or they had. so they moved further to the right which put me just to the left of center. I keep hoping a dark horse will come out of hiding and bring back the GOP more to the Center, and thus moderating out a lot of the Religious right, and fundamentalists who have absolutely NO BUSINESS in our government or our Bedrooms! And YAY for you for sharing Doonesbury! it hits it right on the head!

Sometimes things have to fall apart completely before they can truly be rebuilt. I think we are watching this happen to the Republican Party this year.

I've been hearing discussions that the Republican party has always represented the special interests. I think they need to look up the definition of conservative and start to apply it. We need two parties-- one more liberal and one more conservative. That provides the discussion that helps make wise choices. Right now what I hear from Republicans isn't conservative in anyway. They say they would balance the budget but they never have. Now if they did it, it'd be on the backs of the poor and middle. Their dive toward the religious right isn't conservative, it's regressive.

Both of the major political parties have changed, but the GOP seems to have made the biggest move to extreme positions. If somebody doesn't rescue the party, maybe it will implode.

I'm scared by the number of people willing to support these extreme views.
