Lambs

When lambs are being born, there really isn't a lot to say. For the most part it goes well.

We also have a new calf where it's not going quite so super as the mother is young and basically is rejecting it. By putting her in a head gate, we can make her feed it but that can't last. One of those less than perfect aspects to raising livestock. No photos of her. She doesn't deserve it but lamb photos below. Their mamas are almost always wonderful examples of what that cow should be doing.

And what would the story be without him?

Love the lambs. And that ram is quite a beautiful animal as well.

will the abandoned baby be fed by another mama if it's mama doesn't get her act together?

No, we would have had to feed it but this time around we didn't want to do that. We put an ad into Craig's List and sold that mama and baby with one more heifer to a small farmer just getting into cattle. Perfect set up and they were willing to fuss with the baby if the mother continues to not care for it. Off our place, away from her herd, she might do better. We basically gave the calf to the buyer if he took the cow and heifer. We had too many other problems here to fool with that one. It's a good deal for the buyer.

The little lambs are so cute! But, bad mama cow.

I like your solution to the cow problem. Hope it works out for the new farmer, and the calf. How nice for you to be welcoming new lambs.

Good mothering is a natural instinct, unevenly spread.
