Once again we have had a catastrophic shooting with a mass murderer who had the kind of weapons that enabled him to kill and injure so many. We will be reading again and again about the victims, about who this shooter was, but can we, as a people, get a handle on the fact that having ordinary people able to buy weapons that are intended only for killing humans, this is as insane as this guy obviously was? When will we get a grip on it that to have a right to own a weapon doesn't mean an AK47 or AR-15? Yes, he'd have killed a lot even with a shotgun, ordinary rifle, or handgun, but it'd have been easier to stop him.
We are clearly in a very violent time with people feeling they have a right to kill others. What can we do to protect ourselves from this? We do know at least one step we could take. Why don't we have the guts to take it and take on the NRA and the idiots who defend the right to own these kinds of weapons because they might want to take over the country someday...
This is just heartbreaking and when you do live in such a violent time, you know it could be you or your family next time. We can't stop all of it but we can take some intelligent steps to at least stop the sale of such weapons. And if we can't, then tell me who runs this country and are we really just rabbits whose lives don't count?

I agree with you completely. I read that after Grover Norquist, the NRA was the most powerful influence in the US. I cannot understand why this is so.
I'm with you 150%! This killing spree was so horrific---I do not understand how anyone doesn't get that people should NOT be able to buy these kinds of guns. Who is running our country??
Agree completely. This madness must be stopped and that will only happen if people start speaking up.
I agree with every word you have written here. And how about tackling our worship of violence in the media, such as the movie people were watching, some of them children?????Some of whom died?????

It's time for us to take back the power held by the NRA. There is no need for typical Americans to own assault weapons meant for the military and police. How many times will we have to witness such events before something changes.

If some of the theater patrons had been armed they could have stopped him before he killed so many people. Gun ownership is basically outlawed in Mexico and they have no gun violence right?!
Like they would come armed and then know where to shoot when he had so much body armor and there was all that smoke? Seriously you believe the NRA with their lack of caring for ordinary citizens. They put out that bilge and again and again right wingers swallow it.
and that doesn't defend the ownership of assault rifles that can kill so many people so fast. Explain away that one.
When my nephew was very young he startled his mother because he was running around in circles growling the words "Kill, kill, kill". She determined that he was responding to a toy commercial he had seen while watching Saturday morning cartoons. After that, she kept an eye on his t.v. time. I don't advocate censorship but this is an example of how children get exposed to the glamorization of violence. Even a good conscientious parent can get sideswiped. I'm not sure if this adds any more light on the subject but I thought I would share it with you in case it does. -- Julie
I think all ideas should be explored, Julie. The ones who say we shouldn't try to figure it out right now are the ones who don't want us to seriously look at changes. When some time passes, people care less and nothing happens-- then it repeats and that will keep happening. Whether entertainment is a factor who knows. Is war as a solution part of the problem? A lot of possibilities. I plan to write more about this as I don't buy into the-- let's look the other way mentality of some.

Something else to add. My nephew's episode as Damian from The Omen happened before video games and the Internet. He grew up and turned out fine like most kids do. Back then, the saying was "Be careful what you say and do around your kids". They copy-cat. Lots of issues to be examined and none to be ignored. -- Julie
