On aging and fashion choices

I saw this, thought it was great, and that it fit well with the recent discussion on aging.

Now I am not into the kind of fashion written about there, but think it's totally great and admire women with that kind of verve. I had a grandmother with some pretty showy wigs (the other one kept her hair in a coronet of braids all of her life). The grandma with the wigs also wore colorful styles and had an attitude a lot like those ladies.

A very dear friend of mine has worn interesting hats all of her life. She's short and said it made her be seen. She felt more empowered with them. Now I wear hats hiking but otherwise maybe I think it would do the opposite for me being I am a tall woman.

I offend the fashion police though as I still wear jeans. They say that's not at all appropriate for old women. Tsk tsk. I have worn them all my life and am not about to give them up over an accident of age. They say women of a certain age should not wear sleeveless tops. Sorry but do 'they' have any idea how hot it feels with long sleeves when the temperatures rise. If aging arms bother someone, look away.

Anyway for those who didn't already see the article, read it, and come back to comment maybe on your own ideas on that kind of fashion for yourself or others-- of a certain age.

Interesting links leading to more interesting links. Dressing up sounds like fun but takes more time and money than I am willing to put into it. At 70 I still wear jeans, and when its hot, I go sleeveless and wear "walking" shorts as well as a variety of hats to keep my head from baking. Daily wear is mostly much jeans and tees. Winter daily wear is the same stuff I used to wear hiking. I have dressy stuff for occasions.

I dressed up when I worked and on weekends I dressed down as we hiked, camped, and rafted. The reverse is true now. The weekend wear is now daily wear and the dressy week stuff is now for special whatever that may be. Comfort and utility is paramount to me now.

I'm like you with the jeans. That's the good thing about country/small town living. No one really cares much about fashion. However, I think if you have the money, then it can be a fun thing to do. I've always worn hats and I'm tall, but no one else around here wears them - even on over 100 degree days. That, I don't get.

Jeans forever! Love your blog…

YES - jeans forever! I have stopped wearing sleeveless tops, but to be fair I haven't worn them much since my early 30s - 15 years ago. I have not had toned arms in a very long time, and just as I wouldn't wear shirts that expose my belly, I won't expose those upper arms.

Love the video. Didn't read the article, but I'll be back to do that. I had a grandmother who was a total fashionista and she always looked fabulous--to the very end. My mother thought, however, she was an embarrassment because of her style choices. Oh well, can't please everyone, and as we age, it's just more important to please ourselves.

That CNN clip was interesting. Pat does wear jeans and occasionally sleeveless tops, when it is hot. I think she is attractive but she won't let me pick out clothes for her. She will not wear low waisted/bare midriff type things, says they are for much younger bodies.

Ahh, your joy filled topic prompted me to call my own very dear friend. She wears hats. She is known for her hats. We watched the video together, reminisced and kibitzed about fashion and aging. We sighed and paused and and commented during the video and at your post at the same times. Like you, I am tall, wear my gray hair longish, wear levis, sleeveless and sometimes spaghetti straps. Your right, it’s hot. My skin is wrinkled. My face is wrinkled, I don't wear a veil. True, the length of my shorts are now a walking shorts ten inch inseam in public. Dresses and skirts that flow and swirl match my mood most Sunday afternoons and my Tuesday Lynn's day out. The wonderful women you featured are life affirming, inspirational, gorgeous. I'm taking away far more than I'm leaving here.

I tend not to want to be noticed in public and dress as far down as possible. Jeans or cargo pants and t-shirts are my uniform. I have a couple of dress up outfits for nice occasions.
