joint sorrow

I just want to tell our friends in India how sorry I am, as are all in this country, to hear about the terrible attack in Mumbai. The news here has been following it, our hearts are with you, and we all are so upset for what you must be going through.

One regular reader here, Ugich Konitari, lives there and perhaps more who come sometimes. I hope none of your family or loved ones were in the area when this awful thing happened.

When we hear about something like this, it impacts us all. The world has to find better ways to deal with political differences that seem to too often explode into violence :(

Unless we are willing to submit to Islam, and all it entails (stoning women for adultery, beheadings, etc.), we will always be at war with the radical Islam ideology.
There is no other option, as is clearly stated within the Koran.

Rain,

Thank you so much for caring.

Yes, this whole thing is ghastly, and innocent people who did nothing wrong are being killed, because of some misguided brainwashed folks. I live about an hour away, and used to go in that area to work, a few years ago.

There have been some explosions and stuff closer to where my daughter goes daily for her classes, and she wont be going today, till all this stuff ends...

Our overcrowded suburban train system , however is running back to normal, with ordinary folks out to show, that work goes on regardless. They might possibly show you those visuals on cnn.

Mumbai has had its share of such trauma, but this beats everything that has happened so far.

Lets hope that somewhere, good sense prevails in the end, and innocent folks dont lose lives like this....

Radical Islam is such a ghastly ideology, you are right Sharon. In the Koran it clearly states that (paraphrasing) for those "infidels" who reject Islam, "Off with their heads!" (And you always wondered where that phrase came from, huh!)
A am usually a peaceful person, but I wouldn't mind if we dropped a few well-placed nukes over there...it would save millions of lives in the long run, much like in Japan WWII. If we didn't drop the two on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the war would have lasted 20 more years.

POLITICAL differences? Yes, I sure would say there are differences, but more like IDEOLOGICAL...we treasure life, the Islamic terrorists worship death in order to reach their "72 virgins."
So what does this attack tell us about the War on Terror? It tells us that is is still on, and we should be grateful to have a president that has made sure for 8 years that this violence has not once again come to our shores as it did on 9/11. We will see if Obama is up to the task!
Perhaps those on the left should stop criticizing our Border Patrol for their checkpoints around western Washington. The terrorists in India came ashore in boats!

All societies have radicals but they are on the fringe and they will become more on the fringe.( paraphrase Barack Obama) The change we are witness to in Washington is the president elect was elected on his stand on issues and his values. Our president elect believes in God and people. People, I understand Obama to mean, are all people of the world. We have a president elect who is organized in the way he approaches problems and will surprise the world.
There are some myths about terrorists. 1) We are fighting Terrorism. 2)You can't reason or talk to a terrorist. 3)We have been protected from terrorists for 8 years.
Terrorism is a method of warfare used by the powerless. Buddhist monks have used terrorism when they were pressed to do so. Since terrorism is not the real issue, a war is not going to ever win over it.
My opinion is the ring leaders of terrorists are not religious Islamics but they rewrite the Koran and use the fundamental religion. There have been periods of history where Islam and Judaism and Christianity were practiced along side one another in peace.
Lastly, we have not been protected from terrorists the past 8 years. They are watching in satisfaction at how we throw away our money and good citizens in a senseless war. They are feeling like they are winning as we become more and more powerless.
If there is a change that brings back moral responsibility to the economy of the world, we will all be winners.

Yep, I'll bet those 100+ victims in India sure could "talk" and sing Kumbaya with those terrorists.
Parapluie is certainly living in a fantasy world...a dangerous one of moral equivalency at that.

Anonymous,
Yes, I live in a dream world. Yet, I feel lowering yourself to hate is the danger to fall into.

I do not lower myself to hate, but these people only understand one thing and that is power. We need to take the gloves off our military and let them do what they are intended to do and that is crush their enemy. These fanatics hide among women and children and kill and maim their own people to rule by terror. We are in a world war for survival with radical Islam and eventually when enough people are killed, the rest of the world will realize it. Regardless of how you feel about George W. Bush or the war in Iraq, we have taken the fight to the radical Muslims in a much bigger way than we have in the last 20 years and that has kept more Americans safe than anything else could have possibly done.

I will be writing more about this because it's a complex subject and not simple. When you say take the fight to radical Islam, ingineer, do you mean secular leaders like Hussein, who had nothing to do with 9/11 or the Taliban who did? Bush went after both and did not finish the one job before he began a second which is a long way from done either.

If Iraq should, say in 5 years, vote for a radical Islamic cleric who operates like the Taliban, what would the US do about it given we said they should have the right to vote for whoever they want? Khomeni was popular in Iran.

Currently the world situation is bad with the extremists in the Islamic world posing a very real danger but it's not so simple as you imply to get them, not when it takes so few weapons to launch an attack like Mumbai just suffered.

Also I agree with one thing Parapluie said about the damage they did to us with 9/11. They haven't needed to attack us again. Given our ports are not safe, our borders not protected and neither are our chemical plants, they could probably attack again-- if they wanted to do so. They haven't needed to do so. They have watched us self-destruct as the Soviet Union did at one time economically.

Bush has not in any way guaranteed our safety by the things he has done like torturing illegally when it's gained nothing in terms of real information or benefit and destroyed our reputation as a fair people. Bragging that he has, when we don't know that there's been an attack ever thwarted by anything he's done, is like saying Mission Accomplished. It wasn't then and it's not now.

In my opinion, it's way too complex for simplistic answers but I don't think Obama would disagree that it's very serious and hopefully the world can find some answers. The more I read about it, the worse I feel it is as a problem.
