Barack Obama

With the holiday season fast upon us and enough stress with personal expectations always attached to that season, not to mention a new year almost here, I want to write only positive things until we are into January, things about the holidays, about beauty, about my own life lessons. This will be one last political post-- unless something huge happens that requires a place to vent and give others likewise.

Fran from Sacred Ordinary asked what I thought regarding Oprah Winfrey campaigning for Barack Obama. Winfrey is one of America's most popular figures and known around the world-- not to mention one of the wealthiest women. The question being asked by many, with no definitive answers, is will that shift the race to give him an advantage over Hillary?

It would not with me as I am one of the few Americans who does not watch Oprah, have not for many many years. I don't care for her program style and don't watch any of that kind of show; so it's not dislike of her personally. I think she is operating in a media where ego gets inflated and anybody who doesn't have that problem would be a saint. From all I have read, she is no saint. But also it seems she does try to use her wealth and platform in positive ways to make the world better. I have no reason to believe that she chose to support Obama for any reason other than having known him from Chicago, where she also lives, and believing he's the best person for the presidency.

I guess some of the critics of Oprah complain, that when she speaks to the voters, coming out to see her with Obama, they are not hearing the sophisticated Ms. Winfrey of her program but rather a woman who sounds like she came from the streets. Well Duh!

If you see Oprah on vacation, it looks to me like she has not forgotten her roots. She was a girl from poverty who grew into a woman of great power and a sophisticated polish that she can use when she needs it. Inside she is still that girl. I understand this as I can turn on the more sophisticated thing, but inside me is a little girl with the glasses who grew up at the end of a country road on a small farm.

So will she impact Obama's hopes for winning the nomination? She won't hurt it in my opinion. She is approaching it as an ordinary citizen. She is not implying she has more power than she does. In the end, he will be the president, not her. She does motivate people to come out and give him a look, listen to him, but she cannot get him the nomination or election.

I think celebrities have every right to be out there speaking for their favorite candidate-- as well as political causes. Whether that is Bo Derek supporting George W. Bush or Barbra Streisand supporting Hillary Clinton, it's a right of every citizen. Celebrities should not have to give that up simply because they are famous.

Citizens likewise need to evaluate who is any person endorsing a candidate. Do they know the issues? Do they have a hidden agenda? Not all celebrity endorsements are a help. They said that Hillary's people had to do polling to decide if it benefited her to have Streisand come out for her, but in the case of Oprah, I find any drawback to be unlikely.

Unless something comes along to change my mind, Barack Obama is my choice for the nomination and it's not because of Oprah. It's not because of all of his political views-- with which some I disagree. I haven't liked some of his religious comments either, but there is nobody there that I find totally is my choice. There never is.

My favoring Obama is because of what I believe is his character. Right now a leader of character is more important to me than exactly agreeing with me on everything. I think that when people ask him questions, you can see him think about it-- not memorized answers snapped out like a machine, but real thought. It's part of why he's not as slick in a debate as others. Debating skills and thirty second sound bites do not automatically translate into leadership skills.

I have gone back and forth between him and John Edwards; but if I vote my heart; and it's what I intend to do, the person who comes closest to what I hope for in a president is Obama. I'd like to see our country have a fresh start, a person in that office that we can feel proud of having elected. He might not have all the experience of others, but many of those who do are so corrupted by the system that, in my mind, they are already on the 'wrong' side whether they are from the right or the left.

If the candidates running with no chance to win would get out of the way, I think Obama (or Edwards) would be leading Hillary by a comfortable margin because she is not the candidate favored by the majority. A lot of people, not just on the right, are tired of the Bushes and the Clintons. Obama represents a change. If, however, it's Hillary at the end of the primaries, she'll have my vote in November. I just think we can do better, and better-- in my mind-- is Barack Obama.

If readers here have other candidates they have decided they support, please feel free to name them and the reasons in the comments-- from either party. It's hard to believe the season where this will be decided once again is almost upon us. On the other hand, it feels like it's been forever since Bush actually got into that office. I can only hope he will not do more damage to the country before he's gone...

[I received an email asking to include this link regarding Obama on education and considered it worthwhile with more information on what an Obama presidency might look like.]

I have liked Oprah for years, and when she first presented Obama on her show, I thought WOW!! and have continued to like him. I also like Edwards. Edwards has the experience that Obama lacks, so I would like to see an Edwards/Obama ticket, to groom Obama for the NEXT 8 years. I think the two of them together would give the majority of the people the change they are craving and the experience this country needs so desparately.

But it will all boil down to who can give us universal health care, guaranteed education for all students and who can put forth the best solution to the illegal immigration problem.

Building a wall is just a waste of money. What makes them think the illegals wont just tunnel under it also?

Hillary is not the answer to our needs at all!! ACK!! Ptooee,

I think Oprah will help Obama a lot with the people, especially the black voters, who don't seem so convinced he is the right choice. She will also help with the womens vote since that is what Hillary is counting on. I think the Clinton machine will likely chew him up and spit him out, but I have thought he was the future of the party since he spoke at the Dem National Convention a few years back. Even if he gets beat this time around he is young and has a long future on the National Stage.

And most of the people that I know do not want government run health care. They want affordable health care. I know many people in various levels of the health system from doctors to nurses to paramedics to non-medical hospital employees and about the only people for socialized medicine among them are the Nurses Union leadership because they think it will give them more members and more political power.

Obama needs to get his message out about what he stands for. Right now he is like Fred Thompson, he looks good on the surface, but he has not really shown anything to convince me he is presidential material.

PS I posted before I read the Obama Education link. I like his plan. I think Hillary is going to say whatever it takes to win and then just go with the status quo. Kind of like they said about her voting for No Child Left Behind then saying it was a bad law, but not putting up anything of her own to do it better.

I think it is great that Oprah is backing Obama! I think she is a very sincere peeson in this regard and is well aware of the power she possesses to imfluence people and/or make them aware of things---weather a book or a Presidential Candidate.! I say Bravo!

I have been supporting Obama since quite awhile before he even announced his candidacy. I had an icon on my blog sidebar "RUN OBAMA RUN"......I have read both his books, done lots of research on him and I feel he is the person to best heal this country, take us in the right direction financially and in all other issues. I feel he will do the best job restoring ALL the damange that's been done over these 8 years and he's always had MY vote. Oprah or no Oprah.

Thanks for answering my question. I knew you would have done your homework, unlike me who is pretty-ostrich like when it comes to politics--usually. I also have a preference for Edwards and I like Mary Lou's thinking that perhaps they would make a good ticket. A lot is going to depend on the Republican candidate, I guess. I have qualms about Edwards only in the respect that his wife's metastatic breast cancer is going to require a lot of attention from the man who loves her. Would he be able to fully support her if he was president? I like Obama, too, but the little I've seen of Hillary's campaign does not warm my heart. I greatly admire her and even made a SoulCollage card featuring her in my community suit a few years ago. I keep thinking of her in the international arena and wondering if she could hold her own. Again, Mary Lou says what it all boils down to and I agree with her.

Question : Are the voters coming out to see Oprah or because they like Obama ? Is Hugo Chavez available ? :-)

Rain Trueax said...

The crowds he drew with her as an attraction were his largest, as I understood it which means they came to see her but they then listen to him. Nobody said Americans weren't entertainer oriented but the question is whether a celeb can draw votes, not crowds... and how can you throw Chavez into this mix? Are you implying that anyone supporting Obama is secretly a lover of would-be dictators and a communist? It seems to me if there is any fear of dictator loving voters, it'd be of those on the right. The right is full of the voters who gave us GW Bush with his wantabe king and whispers in god's ear attitude.

I was just reading an interesting article on the TPM Cafe site which claims that 'Obama talks the talk, but doesn't walk the walk,' and cites some interesting evidence. My take right now is I am voting for Kucinich during the primaries and for which ever Democrat survives in the general election because ANY of them are better than ANY of the Republicans.

Rain Trueax said...

That was interesting, MaryContrary. I went looking at that site and it's one I haven't read before. Obviously the writer against Obama was a Hillary supporter but it didn't influence you to support her. I agree with you that Kucinich has many positive factors. The biggest drawback for him, besides that he's probably too far left for the majority of Americans, is that he hasn't displayed charisma, which unfortunately seems to be a needed quality today in leaders, maybe always. I have not voted on charisma given I voted for Tsongas and even Kucinich in the past. I just am afraid now that it's an important factor. As for their point in the article that he hasn't held any hearings; he's been running for president for that last year; so it probably is a lot of the reason. You make good points though and that's the big thing-- that we all be really thinking about this

I am an Edwards fan, but would definitely vote for Obama in a general election. I think if Hillary is on the top of the ticket, I would have to decide whether to vote at all. If I am in a traditionally blue state, I could see sitting out an election because I sincerely couldn't even hold my nose to vote for her.

My dream ticket: Gore/Obama
My other dream ticket: Edwards/Obama

Hillary has my vote. She is smarter than all the other candidates put together. You go girl!

I admire Hillary's spunk but I never would hire her as a nanny. She would not be as effective as new vim and vigor like Obama has. I want to see some youthfulness in the presidency to effect change.

I could not and would not ever vote for Hilary. I am not sure I'd go so far as to say I would vote for the Republican if the other choice were Hilary- that would depend on who that other candidate is. I might just not cast a vote for President, given that choice.

But then I live in a Red state so it probably wouldn't matter anyway. King County (Seattle) wags the whole rest of the state and what the others want doesn't count. The People's Republic of King County will control our states vote.

Rain Trueax said...

I will vote. I always vote. Since 1964, when I first was privileged to vote in a presidential election (you had to be 21 back then), I have voted in all major elections and will this time. If the democrats choose her and I hope they will not, I will vote holding my nose. It won't be the first time. I just hope there is a wiser choice made for who the democrats run. Frankly I hope both parties choose wisely and we have two good choices, and the only hard part is deciding which is best; but it's not likely to be the case. It never has been in my many years of voting.

Why isn't anybody bringing up Obama's religion and how it would affect his presidency? Or can we only talk about Romney and Huckabee like that.

Rain Trueax said...

you need to reread my original blog, ingineer. I said-- "I haven't liked some of his religious comments either, but there is nobody there that I find totally is my choice." He is a Christian and that is what they all are except maybe Romney as there are some who believe that Mormon beliefs are not Christian. Nobody though put down Romney for his religion's odd beliefs but rather because he put down all non-believers. I don't like any of them milking their religion as reason to vote for them. Huckabee is the most fanatical of the believers with ignoring science to put down evolution but there are none running who are not in a religion. In this country it is not possible to win as an atheist, I guess.

I read Peggy Noonan's column on December 14th and she said she doubted even Reagan could win in the atmosphere of the Republican party today. To be spiritual and not a church goer is not enough. Now Obama could win democrats and not talk up his religion but he's aiming now for the election, not the primary and that's where it will be a factor with the people who espouse Christian beliefs with often no idea what that means for lifestyle...

I have done some research on Obama over the last few days and I am liking him more and more. Hillary seems to be self destructing a little and hopefully that will continue. I think I might have to change my registration for the primary so I can vote for him.
