life of a writer... or two

while in Yachats

This week, for my other blog, Rain Trueax, I wrote a piece on how I do my writing-- my personal goals for what I want my books to say.

It must have been a good time for thinking about such as I came across an article by another romance author with her own process which I not only related to but found fascinating.

If you are interested in writing yourself or reading, I think you will find both pieces of interest.

I used to think I would like to be a writer, but it turns out I have no discipline.

I think it's finding the story and then you will want to do nothing but write it down. It won't require discipline. It will be a fire within. I've tried to come up with stories in other genres. They just don't come. When you find your story and the excitement of those characters, you won't want to do anything but write it down. And the more you write, the more will come to you. At least that's my experience.

I keep thinking I could write something...if I just found something to say! Thus I agree with your comment above. I have no trouble creating an interesting character or writing a reasonably good scene...but where in the heck an I going? What am I trying to say? I like that photo very much in the post above, one of the best.

thanks. I start with a sentence and a scene. Just start. Know your genre and just start. I've said it a lot-- writing begets writing. Sometimes I've started one and it does not go anywhere right away. I'll leave it. A year later it might be ready.

Also use music. It's a powerful tool. I have a lot of soundtracks. They have the advantage of no words to get in the way.

Also for some-- start with a short story. That's up to 7500 words and not so intimidating as a full novel. Sometimes when we get an idea we aren't sure where it will go. My newest work was at first going to be a short story before I realized it had more story than that. then I thought novella which can be up to 40,000 words. But too much for that. It ended shorter than my other historicals at 80,000 with maybe an epilogue yet to write. But I don't want to put in more than the story needs. It is whatever it takes to tell that story.

I have to have a place to tell this story. When I was at the beach that week-end, I got quite a few nice photos that my husband took. Sometimes are like that. the photos just all come out.

But something funny happened to some that didn't. I was in the living room at the cottage and talking to Diane. She was saying how beautiful I was looking and asked if she could photograph me. Now this was pretty harsh sunlight coming in but I said okay. She came back with the camera took a photo, looked at it and frowned. That didn't look good at all, she said. She tried again with another frown. I could only laugh. I know how photos can be. I didn't ask to see them when she said she'd just delete them. Some things we are better not seeing-- and a bad photo is right up there at the top of the list :)
