foxes in June

The foxes had been living under our porch for almost two months when I suddenly realized I'd never taken a video of their activities. One day I saw them out and grabbed the little camera, set it on video and took some shots. It turned out to be a lucky decision as the next night they all were moved out. By moved out, I mean some of the babies went on their own-- one ran out in the video if you watch carefully to follow its mom. Some though still required being carried.

As soon as they were gone, the space under the porch that had been their den, got boarded up sufficiently to keep them from returning. It took a little longer to get the individual videos into one. I wish I had had the window open for any possible sounds but I didn't think of it and maybe they would have been less natural if they had suspected I was watching.

Here it is-- from June.

Those Videos of the 'Little Foxes' was just delightful...I love seeing them so very playful, while Mama Fox is ever watchful...You did good Rain!!! They are such very Beautiful animals....And those Babies---ADORABLE! Seeing them like that, it is hard to remember that they lead very very hard lives, and have to be incredubly cunning, to survive...! Thanks Sooo Very Much, for this little Window into their lives...
"The Little Foxes"---Lilian Hellman's famous play---was certainly well named....!

That really is some good video. Great, in fact, considering you didn't actually have a blind to shoot from.

The behavior of the kits looks as much feline as canine. I kept thinking that they looked different from our foxes, and, sure enough, yours are gray foxes and ours are red foxes.

That is a big difference, Mark as the red foxes cannot climb. I do think gray foxes act feline a lot of times. They can partially retract their claws which is another feline trait. I think they are also smaller.

And yes, Naomi, they are so cute to watch that it's hard to believe these really are wild animals.

I wonder if the fact that red foxes can't climb would help us figure out a way to keep them from eating the outside cat food. We have been trying to figure that one out for a while now.

Such a great video! You really captured their playful essence. Wonderful! Also interesting that the gray foxes climb, but the red foxes don't.

Finally got to watch it. They do seem like cats, don't they.
