Independence Day

Independence-- autonomy, freedom, self-determination, potency, power, resilience, strength

In the United States, as we celebrate the Fourth of July, our Independence Day, we are facing many issues as to what kind of people we want to be. Independence and what that means is a good thing to think about anytime but maybe especially on a day when we celebrate our founding.

Our Declaration of Independence is a truly great document. A must read for every citizen on this day!

Happy 4th, Rain!

I agree with TARADHARMA....The Founding Fathers knew what they were talking about! I think we DO forget what "Freedom" really means. Today is a GREAT time to remember.

Yes, the 4th isn't really about beer and fireworks even though it seems that way tonight. It reminds me to share the Declaration of Independence with my grandkids.

Sorry about comments that are not coming through. If you wrote one but it didn't show up, it's blogger not me. I like all related and thoughtful comments-- agree or disagree. Hopefully whatever is causing blogger to eat them will get fixed.

My second attempt to post a comment! I'll try to remember how I introduced the challenge of counting freedoms we might take for granted. The first one I thought of is Public Broadcasting which at least tries to present fairly different sides of current issues facing our country. When I read Rain's post, "Independence Day", I just had watched the Washington DC celebration with many popular entertainers coming from all economic, age and racial groups. Of course not everybody can be come stars, and as our population grows the percentage of talented entertainers who make it to the big time will have to become smaller. Yet there is still the possibility that anyone can rise to stardom no matter who they are. Another freedom I count as important, is being allowed to voice an opinion as I will do now hoping to have a conversation that will get people thinking and engaged.
My opinion that I am beginning to form: Our Constitution had good intentions to create a structure for government that allows gradually and thoughtfully adapting to new conditions now and in the future. to me that means during war and when the country is challenged by unforeseen diffucult times, the government can be stronger. This means the citizens will for awhile have less autonomy and will want to have government provide basic needs after national disasters for example. Looking into my crystal ball I see challenges in weather severity and with the poisoning of river systems from mining our resources. But times will surely improve with creative adaptions that we can muster and then we have a governmental structure which can release more autonomy and freedoms.

I am glad you went to the trouble to post your thoughts on this, Diane. They added a lot as they always do :)
