The Basis of Astrology

Okay, I know how many skeptics there are on what astrology does. Most of this, I think, comes out of not knowing much about it and basing what they do know on horoscopes in the newspapers.

So I thought, hey I'll give a whack at discussing it even though I am not an astrologer. I look at it from the outside as one who has had horoscopes done by others, bought quite a few books on astrology, done natal charts for friends using a computer program (which was more about my ability to create characters than understanding the star combinations), and had an interest in what it all might mean and why. I especially think that when I see my own life reflecting big changes without anyway for me to explain it.

Here's the first personal opinion. I don't think much of horoscopes either especially not those in newspapers. That's simply too general to have much meaning for anybody. I have had a horoscope that was specific to my birth time and it still didn't seem to hit on what happened to me on those dates. I think there are too many variables in our lives to have the planets explain any given day.

Natal charts, now those are closer to having meaning. That means on the date you were born, here are the general characteristics of people born at that exact time, place and date. That turns out to be surprisingly close if you have ever had one done. The question would be why is it close, and why would I believe astrology has value in a general sense for trends that are impacting humans as a whole, not each individual sign specifically?

First of all, here is what astrology actually is in the sense of that age old method of looking at the stars and planets to determine some trends. The planets move around the sun as does the earth and all orbit in a mostly predictable way. In the sky, way out there, the constellations, they are on a different pattern. So as our universe moves, those constellations don't have the same apparent movement. They move too but so far out that it's not like our rotations that form more regular cycles. Same way with the planets that are closer to us changing more often in our sky than the ones farther out.

Let's take Neptune, which is being much discussed right now because it is moving into what is considered its own sign-- Pisces. This is not some arbitrary imaginary thing. Neptune, if you looked up into the sky, you would see it in the constellation Pisces. You could measure where it is there. You could also measure where it was compared to other planets.
"From now until 2026 with only a brief retrograde back to Aquarius from September until Feb 2012, Neptune will be a strong influence for basic escapism from the uncomfortable, fearful aspects pressuring our shared reality, and at the same time, the arts and creative imagination and expression will flourish as artists tap into the inspiration of the muse, and the vast, dry spiritual emptiness of our cultures open themselves to direct experience of Spirit." Patricia A.Liles
If you get an astrology reading from one who really is good at it, they will have the degrees of these planets which is measurable. Astrology is more about mathematics than mysticism. The theory on astrology is that these combinations, as they naturally occur in the skies, coincide with certain trends on earth. They repeat themselves over generations. Some birth signs might feel some of these impacts more than others but the overall impact is universal.

Here's where the skeptic goes-- ridiculous. But wait. Supposing that this is all based on observations of human life as it is with say the Vedic school of astrology which goes back thousands of years. Supposing that it's not so much that the planets make this happen as it is that these naturally occurring combinations are part of the trends of human nature. Suppose some observed this and kept records of the impacts, and over generations, the patterns were repeated.

I have a book on life in the United States since its beginning. Generations The History of America's Future 1584-2069 by William Strauss & Neil Howe. Their theory, which has nothing to do with astrology, is that each generation impacts the next and we have had in the US eighteen American generations. Within the generations are four repeated types with certain characteristics.

In each cycle, there will be Idealist, Reactive, Civic, and Adaptive. One impacts the next. It is a cycle that continually impacts who the next generation will be based on the one ahead of it.

For example, my parents were of the Civic generation while (they calculate the start of this differently for the year) I am of the Idealist (which other social engineers call Boom and say starts a few years later than this book has it).

Understanding this was of particular interest to me as a writer who wanted my historic characters to seem real, but I can see another implication to it.

Supposing that astrology, rather than some mystical set of numbers with no meaning, actually is using what has happened over and over again, patterns that are repeated. We can, when we look at the skies, take measurements, then look at the likely trends to come, how they are impacting our lives, and use the information. This isn't going to tell us when an earthquake will come but more how humans will likely react to it.

To me, that's what astrology is about. And if you find a good astrologer, follow what they are saying, observe what the patterns have been and are likely to be, it serves a purpose. It helps you understand why friends or family member might be acting seemingly irrational, why the world seems to be going loopy. You don't have to be fearful about a time that seems particularly upsetting to you because you know that cycles come and go. This too will pass. If you are a sensitive person, you probably already were feeling some of those vibes.

  1. We'll have an opportunity next year to see how the alignment of the stars influences us. 2012, the end of the Mayan calender, is supposed to bring about great changes as the sun aligns with the equator of the Milky Way.

  2. Most astrologers who I read do not think the end of the Mayan calendar means the end of the world or really anything like some are making it out to be. I don't really think astrology could predict such an event anyway given my view of what astrology is all about. Since it's never ended before, how would astrology have a basis to expect it in the future? It can though tell turbulent times which might lead to ends of cultures or at least heighten their risks.

  3. What I've read about 2012 doesn't predict the end. I think the sensational press gets a little information and blows it up into a story that sells. I'm reading a book right now that says that it may be a time of transformation; intellectual, spiritual, etc.

  4. That's what I have read online also, Wally. Those things are more about a planet going into a constellation where it stays many years. That happens with Neptune in Pisces, its home. It does that until August, then appears to be back out before it will be back for many years. Neptune is about many of those things you mentioned.

One thing I have observed about my life over these many years is there are cycles that are impossible for me to explain. Something shifts and it's all different how I see things or what I can do. I have not taken the time to put those over top an astrology chart to see how they fit with it because it doesn't matter a lot. It is being aware when it happens whether one knows it's because of cycles or not. We can ride the waves or fight them. We can use the tides or resist them. Astrology helps us ride them all is what I think.

You know I don't follow astrology religiously although I read a couple of astrologers as I have mentioned. Often I don't look at my own chart until things seem to all be going to hell in a hand basket as my daddy used to say. Then I go look at whether that explains it. It doesn't always.

  5. Astrology is an ancient and thoroughly fascinating 'classical' 'science.' Most people, simply don't have the math skills to understand it's depths.

  6. "Natal charts, now those are closer to having meaning. That means on the date you were born, here are the general characteristics of people born at that exact time, place and date."

If this were true we could expect a majority of our entrepreneurs to have been born during one time, most of our criminals born during another, etc. The behaviors described by astrologers are too subjective to be of any value whatsoever.

If you have ever seen a psychic (such as a palm reader, tarot card, etc.) employ "Cold Reading" people invariably come away convinced that the psychic has some kind of supernatural knowledge.

Pisces does not exist, we (man) decided to give that set of points of light a name. Other cultures (China) found completely different patterns.

And what about the variables of the billions of stars scattered within Pisces. For example; do they have no impact on the constellation (or us) because they are not visible to the naked eye?

The ancients didn't realize that the light from those stars hitting their retinas had left that star, in some cases, millions of years before they were born. Where we see the stars currently is not where they are located now.

Finally, what is the mechanism by which these stars/planets effect our personalities? Gravity? Magic? No one has ever explained the HOW these celestial objects are able project their "power" into human beings, not even one testable hypothesis. The effect of our own earth gravity is millions of times stronger than a distant planet, it would clearly overpower gravity from objects light years away.

We see patterns because we "want" to see patterns, just like we see the Madonna in a cheeze sandwitch or " signs" that the apocylipse is near.

I'm sorry to be a damper, Rain, but of ALL the pseudosciences, Astrology is the one most thoroughly discredited as bunk.

  7. Well sometime you give me your exact statistics, Robert, and let's see how closely it nails you. As for the criminal and entrepreneur maybe having the exact same date of birth, time and place, well we all have the potential for many things and those who have the most possibilities for good might also for evil... Might even not be that different for how they operate. At any rate what astrology gives you is your potential, not what you make of it.

Do you believe in cycles in life?

And you never need to say you are sorry for disagreeing here. I am fine with the 'other' perspective being presented. Just don't mix up psychics or Tarot cards and such with astrology... Incidentally I have several decks of Tarot ;)

  8. Rain, if you mean by sharing my statistics you are offering to do an astrological reading for me personally, I would love the opportunity. How can we facilitate this?

With beliefs such as these, just like religious beliefs, people have a tendency to read/study information that confirms the belief. But what I often ask (usually religious but it applies to any belief) is take the "devil's advocate" position; read and study material that is critical of astrology - don't look at one side but really study the opposing arguments. Give it a "fair trial".

There was a time when I believed in ghosts, UFO's (endless list) but I made the effort to study the opposing position.

If your belief in any idea is strong, how could it possibly hurt to seriously study the other position? You have nothing to lose.

(And honestly, I hope my comments didn't appear harsh - I do like you blog very much)

  9. I think it's great when people bring up their objections to things like this as it lets us discuss it. I am sure there are others who will read it and see it as you do.

On the ghosts... well I have based my opinion on that on things reliable people (to me) have said they saw or experienced. I don't necessarily think that means it's spirits though of those who lived before. It might be energy waves, might be from another dimension, might be many things; but I know too many who have seen such, who didn't believe in it either, for me to think it doesn't exist in some form that can be seen. What is it? Now that's more the question.

I love mysticism, the unexplained aspects to life. If when this is all said and done, when we die, that's it, well what difference will it make? We will never know it wasn't something more. But if there is, what an adventure that might be.

  10. Robert makes an excellent point about the speed of light----maybe that explains our 'past' lives....lol

  11. *laughing* we might discuss that next :)

  12. You know I love you, Rain, but color me a skeptic on Astrology. It simply isn't logical. I agree with Robert.

I love Astronomy, but I consider astrology junk science. If the reading fits me it is more coincidence that reality. I guess my pragmatic personality comes into play on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Nothing wrong with being a skeptic but what if the natal reading fits most who have had one done? How long before the odds are that it would not? When does it cease being coincidence? It's a rather odd thing about why it might work especially since I don't see it as a god driven kind of thing. I can't explain it but often when I am feeling a certain way, I can go look to see what is up and find an explanation there. I find that reassuring as it means it won't last.

But I don't mind people not agreeing. What I will ask though is do you then believe in cycles like the book Generations?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Sorry, I have never read the book Generations so I am unable to answer your question.

I do believe that things go in cycles.

    ReplyDelete
  15. You don't have to have read the book to get the premise which is that one generation impacts another and those cycles are repeated. That's the gist of Generations although it does a lot of explaining how those generations react to things as a group and why that then makes the next generation different.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Love Generations. And yes, I do think generational cycles make some sense. And that babies born in winter and bundled up might behave differently than babies born in summer and free to explore... but astrology is often used as an excuse for whatever behavior one wants to indulge in and that's when it's not a good idea. For entertainment, for guidance when you don't really care and it's essentially like flipping a coin, cool.
