They just benefited less from being able to own others, given manufacturing versus agriculture. What the North did after the Civil War showed the ugliness on both sides in terms of bigotry-- i.e. want you free but not a neighbor... It's still an irony how one side sees the other as the bad guys; but if you look at the whole picture, there is bad and good on both sides.
