tests for Americans

These kind of simple tests often appeal to me, but I am not sure what it means to be 52% American. So like then I am 48% what? Still what it said is true in terms of how I feel about living here and my belief that what we have, the beliefs for which we have said we stand, they are worth fighting for!

You Are 52% American

Most times you are proud to be an American.
Though sometimes the good ole US of A makes you cringe
Still, you know there's no place better suited to be your home.
You love your freedom and no one's going to take it away from you!

i took it again and came out 60% American. Since I hate that CW song, I'm proud to be an American, possibly I could never get too high on it. Now if they'd asked about Battle Hymn of the Republic or Star Spangled Banner, that will make me melt every time, but that CW song intended to milk emotions, that ignores anything that hasn't been right here, that's the kind of thing that will cause us to lose the very freedoms it supposedly sings about. To blanket endorse anything your country does, whatever country it is, probably means you aren't thinking and have turned your brain over to someone else.

I am a victim of the McCarthy era and anti-Semetism. For as long as I have ever thought about this issue (46 years ago) I feel uncomfortably pulled apart and insecure. I can't give my emotions of patriatic allegiance to the USA a percentage. To do so is meaningless to me. But along with being a citizen of the USA, I feel equally strongly that I am a humble citizen of the world as a whole. I think the USA has no right to tell other countries how they must govern themselves.

I like these kind of tests too. I took this one but it will not give me results for some reason. I must be doing something wrong because it just goes back to the page to take the test again.
That song is cheesy, but it has a strong emotional connection for me. At one of the last events I went to with my father they played that song before the National Anthem and then my father passed away while my daughter was at Boot Camp and during the pinning ceremony where she became a Marine at the end of boot camp they played that song.

my problem with songs like that is how they are used. The implication is Iraq is defending our freedoms when in reality it's a tool being used to take them away with a debt our children will never get out from under ($1 trillion and rising estimates) and it ignores how the worst danger to our freedom is coming from within-- something soldiers can't fight. We are so used to a patriotic emotional fervor that we are forgetting where it's taking us.

While we are on the topic. What do you think of the new National Intelligence Report? The people that got Iraq and Sadam's program for Nuclear weapons totally wrong are now suddenly geniuses and totally correct about Iran.
And of course everything is that cowboy Bushes fault even though 2 years ago Hillary was saying the Bush was not doing enough to stop Iran's nuke weapons program. All these people inside the Beltway live in their own reality and have little in common with those of us in the rest of the country.

Rain Trueax said...

I think that the intelligence was skewed before by the Bush administration and I don't know if they are doing it again or not. And if this report was wrong, what would you suggest? We go to war with Iran given our military is stretched thin already in Iraq? We pay more money for another military action when we obviously are not paying for the current one? What would you do if there was still nuclear development going on there? Do you honestly believe it'd be a cakewalk to attack them like you believed it'd be with Iraq? Bomb them and no problem?

AND Bush is NOT a cowboy. He's a frat boy, spoiled, shallow and never has known how to work hard a day in his life. Everything has been handed to him and when it isn't, he pouts. The man doesn't ride a horse, raise cattle or do anything but prance around like a wantabe. To use the word cowboy for him is insulting to the real deals.

Ingineer66 said...

OK I will give that one. He is a frat boy. The cowboy term was from Hillary.

I do not advocate going to war with Iran unless they get a lot more aggressive than their current stance. I still believe that a good portion of the Iranian people want nothing to do with destroying Israel or the west and would be happy to just improve their own lives.
But I think we need to do whatever it takes to keep the Islamic government of Iran from owning or exporting Nuclear Weapons. And if that takes diplomacy or an air raid like Israel did to Sadam or a Special Ops attack, whatever is required, then that is what we should do. Eventually the people of Iran will realize what the world already knows that their government is keeping them from being a member of the world community.

Look at Chavez in Venezuela he has proven even to his own people now that he is a nut job. Soon his only supporters will be in Hollywood and on university campuses.

North Korea is slowly opening to overtures from the West and Iran and Cuba will follow eventually. I am in for the long haul as long as these tyrants do not try too hard to expand their power.

Music tends to produce emotions Rain or else what good would it be ? I don't see Lee Greenwood's song as an endorsement of everything American but rather I do see it as his love for his country.

I took the test after all and came up with a 49%. The percent is OK. But I resent the comments extreemly. I was right at first not to take the test.

Ingineer66 said...

Better late than never. I finally got the test to work for me. I got 78%.

So what this tells us is that if you never question what your government does, if you believe it's your country and doesn't matter if it's right or wrong, if you are a right winger, you can be 100% American. If you disagree with it, are a liberal, then you aren't one. Interesting. I looked to see who made it up but couldn't tell as it was on a page of tests of varying sorts.

Obviously the questions are designed by the tester. Kind of like poll questions can be designed to skew the results. The city I live in recently did an online poll to ask about city services and methods to pay for them. The way the questions were worded about the only result that would come up made it look like the citizens of the city would support a sales tax increase to keep services from being reduced. The city council had to take down the poll with just a little egg on their face.
